Lombardia, Valchiavenna, Madesimo

Vallespluga and Valchiavenna are both popular destinations for experts and enthusiasts of rock climbing, and it’s no surprise because there are plenty natural crags to tackle spread along the valleys.

At the same time there are artificial walls both inside and out – suitable for everyone – at the gymnasium housed at the Sports Centre in Madesimo and in the municipal gym of Campodolcino.

The nearest rock-faces are situated about 10 km from Madesimo, at Vho and Lirone:

Vho
Coming from Madesimo the climbing rock faces are located on rocky outcrops along the old road which is no longer used. You’ll find them just by the roadside on the right as you exit the tunnel shortly after the village of Campodolcino. On the initial part of the cliff there’s a sign displaying “Palestra Fiamme Gialle”. In the lower section the routes follow long slabs with fissures, concretions of quartz which develop along two pitches. The upper section is characterised by structures resulting from the road construction, with several single pitches on vertical and overhanging rock. You can enjoy sport here from spring through to autumn.

Lirone
From Madesimo drive down past Campodolcino and you reach the village of Lirone where there’s a parking area on the left. It then takes about 10 mins. on foot along a trail leading to the base of the stone slabs. There are a range of routes to try out, excellent free-climbing options on rock both hard and smooth, with descents all along the various pitches. Popular spot from spring through to autumn.

The Association of Alpine Guides Valchiavenna organises courses and lessons in rock climbing for both beginners and experts in collaboration with the Consorzio Turistico di Madesimo.
