SKIING IN MADESIMO

The Valchiavenna Skiarea

For ski and snowboard enthusiasts, the Valchiavenna Skiarea offers about 40 kilometers of pistes for alpine skiing from November until late Spring.

Numerous pistes served by modern lift systems are easily reachable from any part of town, without the use of ski buses. Snowmaking systems, snow & fun parks, internationally approved race tracks, and welcoming lodges make for an active and unforgettable holiday.

Those who wish to challenge themselves further can take the cable car all the way to the peak of Pizzo Groppera at about 3,000 meters above sea level. Two of the skiarea’s longest pistes depart from here and glide down the Val di Lei with spectacular views of its lake. Rather than taking the cable car back, more experienced (and properly equipped) skiers can make it back to Madesimo via the Canalone, one of the most evocative off-piste trails in all of the Alps.

Ski and Snowboard Schools

In Madesimo there are two ski and snowboard schools that offer lessons for both beginners and experts.

In addition to private lessons, both adults and children can take part in group lessons for all levels. During the course you’ll have the opportunity to learn not only from the teacher, but with other students of the same level: stimulating each other and making new aquaintences along the way. Learning together is more fun!

Scuola Italiana Sci e Snowboard Madesimo e Vallespluga
Active since 1934, the school has about 50 instructors on staff specialized in various winter disciplines including alpine skiing and snowboarding. There are coaches for all levels, former athletes, and specialists in freeride, freestyle, and skiing for the handicapped.

The main office is located in a large mountain style chalet in the center of Madesimo and has two branch offices – one in Alpe Motta and one on the Arlecchino bunny slope.

MADEPARK SNOW PARK

The Snowpark Made in Madesimo

The Madepark snowpark offers features suitable for all levels. With an eye towards beginners, there are dedicated boxes and kickers of 2m, 4m and 6m. Other structures such as a down rail, rainbow, plug, mail box, cistern, and modular box complete the first level. The park’s set up varies throughout the season so there’s always something new to try!

Built for more experienced freestylers, there is 12-meter kicker constructed on artificially made terracing and equipped with a long landing. Snow conditions permitting, the natural contours of the terrain allow for the construction other features such as step up and spine.

The park is monitored and use of a helmet is mandatory; admission is always free. A few meters away you’ll find two refreshment points with lots of good food and music: Acquarela and Larici.

SKI MOUNTAINEERING

Ski Mountaineering

Study of the terrain, painstaking effort, and lots of sweat culminate in an amazing sense of satisfaction once the destination is reached. High altitudes, blissful silence, and wild ibex give rise to an idylic scene before the long and exciting descent to the point of departure.

Ski mountaineering offers an intense and beautiful alternative to alpine skiing: discovering wild landscapes and overcoming challenges along the way. Before embarking on this type of outing it is strongly advised to equip yourself appropriately and to check the current snow conditions and forecasts. Local guides are always on hand to provide relevant information and/or accompany you on your particular adventure.

Of course, ski mountaineering is not an easy sport, especially if you intend to reach high peaks. Good physical fitness, the proper equipment (which includes a shovel, probe, and ARTVA), route planning, and study of the avalanche bulletin and weather conditions are all required. It is a sport where you cannot afford to be unprepared and where safety must come first. If you don’t feel like going at it alone, there are many ski mountaineering events organized by the Valchiavenna mountain guides which are always very popular.

Alongside ski mountaineering, there are newer sports offered in Madesimo guaranteed to get the adrenaline pumping: these include speedriding (a combination of skiing and gliding using a small paraglider attached to your back) and heliskiing.

SNOWMOBILES

Snowmobile Excursions

For an alternative experience on the snow, Madesimo has allocated over 70 kilometers of tracks for snowmobiles. Let the adrenaline takeover as you race through the heart of the mountains – skidding along the snow, across frozen streams, and through stupendous woodland.

The rental company Team Adventure organises outings on snowmobiles and offers a wide choice of the best vehicles in the Yahama range. Accompanied by highly-experienced guides, you’ll have the chance to discover extraordinary places including the fairy-tale Montespluga and the Spluga Pass. Lunch or dinner at one of the excellent lodges along the way is the perfect end to an exhilarating day.

The well-maintained routes are of varying length but are all situated along the Andossi plateau. Whether partaking in an individual or a group outing there is always an accompanying guide to ensure maximum safety and provide any necessary assistance.

For those who prefer a slower pace, you can venture out aboard the snowcat (minimum of 6 to a maximum of 16 people).
